Munich, Germany, July, 1961: Wilhelm Schuepfer maintains the flame on one of Munich's few remaining gas street lights. Only 713 of the city's 41,000 lights were still gas-powered in 1961, marking Schuepfer and the other gasanzuenderen (lantern wards) as members of a vanishing breed.
